Smithsonian Exhibit: The Way We Worked

June 4, 2016 - August 15, 2016

Free

In partnership with Museum on Main Street, the Smithsonian Institution & State Humanities Councils, the Raymond F. Ratcliffe Memorial

Transportation Museum brings you the traveling exhibit, “The Way We Worked.”

This exhibit highlights the journey, struggle and triumph of the American workforce.

“Imagine the darkness of a coal mine, the fierce winds atop a skyscraper, the heat of a foundry against your skin, or the noises and bustle of a hospital. Americans work nearly everywhere. Every workplace brings different experiences and challenges. Where we work affects when we work, with whom we work, and the way we work.” – The Docent Handbook, The Way We Worked, Smithsonian Institute (2011)

The Way We Worked, allows visitors to have an interactive experience, speaking with docents, viewing historical artifacts and photographic images & displays of the history of our American workforce.

Can you imagine building a skyscraper with no safety net? What about being the only policeman in the entire town? Have you ever wondered what it must’ve been like to be a small town dentist? Have you ever asked yourself what role the depression had on the American working class?

This exhibit answers some of those questions and more, as America’s occupational history is discussed.
